Over fifteen years ago several Christian school parents from both Calvin Christian School in South Holland and Lansing Christian School in Lansing shared a concern about the rising cost of Christian education. Together they had the idea of starting a thrift store to raise money to provide tuition assistance to families with children at their schools and to serve as a witness for the Lord in the surrounding community. After many months of planning, their vision for the future resulted in the formation of what was at that time known as “Harvest Thrift Center”.
The new Harvest Thrift Center opened its doors for business in October, 2000, in a rented retail space located in the Wentworth Woods Shopping Center located at the corner of Wentworth Avenue and River Oaks Drive in Calumet City. Although there were growing pains and the expected difficulties of starting a retail store, it became a well-established part of the community and profits continued to increase.
At the time the store began operating at the Calumet City location it was ideally suited and the number of customers and sales continued to increase, but as time passed the conditions changed. A large grocery store that had been the anchor store and several other tenants left the small strip mall and many spaces went vacant. Naturally, that led to a decline in the number of customers and also a deterioration of the building and surrounding area. The board became convinced that it was time to move to a new location. The expectation was that a new location would result in an increase in sales, a renewed enthusiasm for the store, and a more pleasant and inviting environment for shoppers and volunteers.
In late fall, 2014, a search began for a new location. By the spring of 2015 the board decided to purchase the former Dekker Electric building (many years ago also known as the Lansing roller skating rink) near the corner of Ridge Road and Torrence Avenue in Lansing. The building had been vacant for a number of years, had been vandalized, and needed a major amount of repair and renovation work before it could be used. 2015 was a busy year of reconstruction, restoration, moving, and setting up a new store, which is now called New2You of Lansing. The new store opened its doors for business on December 4, 2015.
Since its beginning in Calumet City, and now continuing in the New2You store in Lansing, it is evident that God has truly blessed our plans and our work. Over the years the store has been blessed with dedicated board members, excellent directors and managers, faithful volunteers, generous donors, and plenty of customers. During these many years the store has been a witness to the community and its customers, and has been able to provide tuition assistance for the parents from Calvin Christian and Lansing Christian. Payouts to the schools have totaled nearly three million dollars. To God be the glory!
